LinuxTag: Ubuntu offers three desktops
On his keynote at LinuxTag, Mark Shuttleworth the next version of Ubuntu as it is expected to offer users three desktops to choose from: Gnome, the KDE used in Kubuntu, and Xfce in Xubuntu.

Shuttleworth said he was confident that the three certificates for the corporate use of VMware, IBM DB2, and MySQL will soon follow. Unlike other enterprise Linux variants, the use and download of upgrades for Ubuntu are free. Shuttleworth aims to make money from support contracts.The Ubuntu release scheduled for Q3 or Q4 of 2006 has the code name “Edgy Eft” and will be more experimental. Among other things, initial results of development are expected to be integrated for the next major release 4 of the KDE desktop. Shuttleworth currently favors Xen as the visualization technology.
