Backwards through Debian into the eye

I've got a computer with a currently unsupported PATA controller (Marvell 6121), which means no DVD/CD installation methods work, since the DVD/CD drives can't be detected by the Linux kernel.

So I took the Debian installer for Windows, and installed a Debian image for installation of a network from the testing distribution to my hard disk, which gave me a second boot option next to the dreaded Windows Vista that came with the box. Then I installed the same Debian version in VMWare, used aptitude to fetch the kernel headers and gcc, downloaded the latest sources for the e1000 driver, and built my own fresh version for the kernel on the netinstall image.
