My Ubuntu won't update!

Sometimes for unknown reasons or known reasons the packages fail to download properly or are only partly downloaded and this causes the upgrade of that particular part to fail.

In the case of the *buntu range of distributions and in fact any Debian based distribution the package manager is dpkg and its closest front end for controlling it is apt. The programs like synaptic, adept, aptitude and add/remove programs all use apt as their back end for connecting to the repositories, getting the list of programs and what can be upgraded and finally downloading and installing.
