I have used Debian for many years and there were always some minor annoyance like the holy war against everything that is closed source and the slow release cycle. But it never got in my way and just worked. So what changed?

I am currently trying to setup Pocoo in my local network on my Debian server. Let's make it short: it doesn't work.
I won't get the software I need via apt and installing it using setuptools also doesn't work, because setuptools in Debian is too old. It also doesn't look like I could update the package using setuptools to a current version.
