Upgrading Debian Etch to Lenny on a Thinkpad T43p

After having brought my wife’s computer from Etch to Lenny already two weeks ago, which as it ran on an almost stock Etch went quite seamlessly, despite the X drivers needed to be reinstalled manually, I also upgraded my T43p to Lenny. More here

This went completely different and also different from the smooth upgrade from Sarge to Etch (even if one had to follow lots of instructions) and ended up in hours of work. Most of it probably due to my mixed versions Etch / backports / multimedia, plus the fact of insufficient disk space …
