You can find many unofficial binary packages around the web, however they are likely to fail on some unmatched runtime dependency … QGIS people made it simple for us to build packages on our own by providing a convenient “debian/” directory in the source tree.

Just installed FreeBSD 8 on a spare partition of my computer. Was planning to use the Debian-installed GRUB to boot it, but when I went to edit GRUB config files they had changed beyond recognition. GRUB 2, it seems, is very different to GRUB 1

Unp is a small perl script which makes extraction of any archive files in easy way. It support several compressors and archiver programs, chooses the right one(s) automatically and extracts one or more files using a single command. It supports rar, zip, tar.gz, deb, tar.gz2, rpm etc..

If you are willing to do a little bit of work you can shoehorn the latest code into a package yourself without needing any special knowledge of how to create packages. Note this will only work with programs that already have been packaged since it re-uses the old packaging info with the new code.

This tutorial shows how you can enable networking in Xen guests (domU) on Hetzner’s DS servers. With the DS servers, you can get a subnet of eight additional IPs (or more) – usually that subnet is different from the subnet that the server’s main IP is from.
