It is simple enough to restore gnome as your desktop.
Open aptitude (sudo it of course) search gnome and install it.
Next reboot, and at login choose gnome as your desktop. There may be some problems (like, alt F2 does not work)
but most of them are simple, or you can google them easily enough. So far at least it works for me.
