MEPIS is easily the most obscure of my favorite distributions. Unlike most Linux distributions, it has neither a company nor a community behind it.

November 21 was the seventh anniversary of MEPIS Linux, so it seems fitting that Warren Woodford has uploaded SimplyMEPIS 8.4.80, the alpha release of MEPIS 8.5.

I downloaded the latest versions of Ubuntu and MEPIS, and burned both a Live CD and bootable USB drive for each. Object: same as always, looking for a Linux distro that Just Works.

Once again I spent the day using Mepis 8 on the 4GB pendrive on my EeePC 901. Quite honestly, it lacks very little for normal day-2-day use although it might just be very marginally slower.

I already posted about booting to Mepis 8 on my EeePC 901 from a 4 GB pendrive and it worked very well if maybe just a little slower than if it had been on one of the internal SSDs.

SimplyMEPIS 8.0.10 has been released, and it is as usual very good. I’ve been pleased and impressed with MEPIS for quite some time now, and despite a few small problems on my various computers, I continue to feel that way.

Certain distributions tend to get more press than others. SimplyMEPIS isn’t one of the ones that gets drooled over by the media the way that Linux Mint, Ubuntu and others do.

In the end, it really wasn’t that difficult to get Mepis 8.0 installed on a 4 GB Kingston pendrive and booting with ease from the Ubuntu Grub on the mbr.

SimplyMepis, or Mepis for short, is a distribution targeted towards new users that has the intended goal of providing a good distribution that is easy to use. Version 7.0, which was my first experience with Mepis was pretty good. But past success means little if the newer version doesn’t deliver. So let’s see how SimplyMepis [...]

So it seems that later this summer Mepis 8,5 will be released, and as normal Warren will release a distro that just plain works, no matter what it’s size, or the packages that are included.

One of the further well-liked Linux distributions, but not one that’s offering much of a risk to Ubuntu in terms of fame, Simply MEPIS however has a great deal to mention it. It’s the community edition of the MEPIS distribution, and right from the start it sparkle with viable luster.

I first tweeted about Ubutu 9.04 a week ago. Now I know I’m not exactly comparing apples with apples, since MEPIS 8 is based on Debian 5.0 and uses KDE 3.5, whilst Ubuntu 9.04 uses GNOME 2.

As KDE 4.2.4 was just released I became really eager to try it out. I have tested KDE 4 series earlier. The first version, 4.0, was bit of a disappointment. 4.1 and earlier versions of 4.2 seemed solid enough for casual use. MEPIS is still based on 3.5 by default.
SimplyMEPIS 8.0 arrives with a complete choice of the best of programs necessary for most people’s pleasure and productivity, all delivered on top of a Debian 5 stable core using the 2.6.27 Linux kernel.
If only life were so simple for the operating systems that run our computers. Let’s start with Linux, or more precisely, SimplyMEPIS Linux.
Because I’ve dealt with the no sound on Linux issue so many times I was about to pull my skull apart. I exercised a little more patience and Googled for the answer which I’ll describe in short here.
Before Ubuntu there was Mepis. At that time it was one of the most user-friendly Linux distribution available. Despite being overshadowed by the popularity of Ubuntu in recent years, SimplyMepis is still one of the most friendly desktop distributions in the Linux landscape.
A friend who is learning Linux installed a larger second(primary-slave) PATA drive to continue his Linux education but insisted on leaving Windows XP on the first(primary-master) PATA drive with no alterations to any part of the Windows XP drive including the MBR or changing master/slave orientation and using remapping in Grub.
Mepis 8.0 is working out just fine. I finally got VLC to play my media files, although Kaffiene and mplayer still just show a blue screen. And I’m not sure exactly what it took to get VLC to working.
Choice is the best thing about Linux. Without choice, we may as well use an operating system where the developers make those choices for us. As we’ve covered in the past, anyone can create a Linux distribution. There is a flip side to all this choice however, and that’s finding the time to find the [...]
