Warren Woodford has uploaded SimplyMEPIS 8.4.94, the beta2 of MEPIS 8.5. This beta is available from MEPIS and public mirrors. The ISO files for 32 and 64 bit processors are SimplyMEPIS-CD_8.4.94-b2_32.iso and SimplyMEPIS-CD_8.4.94-b2_64.iso. More release notes here

MEPIS is easily the most obscure of my favorite distributions. Unlike most Linux distributions, it has neither a company nor a community behind it. More here

Warren, after playing with SUSE and Mandrake (now Mandriva Linux), decided he could create his own distribution that met his needs better and so started what became MEPIS, also known as SimplyMEPIS, a Debian Linux-based desktop distribution.

First Beta of SimplyMEPIS 8.5 Has Linux Kernel 2.6.32

Announced on December 7th by Warren Woodford and the hard working MEPIS developers, the first Beta release of the upcoming SimplyMEPIS 8.5 operating system is now available for download, for both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures. More here

MEPIS Birthday Surprise: SimplyMEPIS 8.5 alpha Release

November 21 was the seventh anniversary of MEPIS Linux, so it seems fitting that Warren Woodford has uploaded SimplyMEPIS 8.4.80, the alpha release of MEPIS 8.5. More here

Warren Woodford explained the rationale behind the 8.5 release: “MEPIS is based on Debian Stable source which is extremely reliable and well supported by the Debian community. Debian makes a stable release approximately every two years, but MEPIS users are always anxious for the latest software. So when we deem it safe to do so, we cautiously update application software using newer sources. In this way, we keep the release relevant and interesting for a longer time.”

This USB creation process is accomplished while running from the Live CD. SimplyMEPIS 8 is based on a stable Debian 5 core using the 2.6.27 Linux kernel. MEPIS Linux is a product founded by Warren Woodford. More here

I downloaded the latest versions of Ubuntu and MEPIS, and burned both a Live CD and bootable USB drive for each. Object: same as always, looking for a Linux distro that Just Works. More here

That’s how I could have described MEPIS 7 when I dinked around with it a year ago or so. But that’s also why the MEPIS 8 live CD used today was much more disappointing, since it didn’t even boot completely either on the PC or on the laptop before going into “Kernel Panic”, which in terms of bad outcomes is likely outranked only by “Major Disaster” and “General Failure.”

Remove ext3 journaling on Mepis 8 install

In the week or so that I’ve been using Mepis 8 from the 4 GB usb key on my EeePC 901,I’ve had at least 5 instances of a corrupted journal on the ext3 fs. More here

On one occasion, however, fsck didn’t work and I ended up having to re-install Mepis.
Now, the Mepis 8 install only offers ext3 and reiserfs as fs options.

Because I ‘ve plowed with the no sound on Linux issuesomanytimes I was about to force my skull apart. I exerted a trifle more forbearance and Googled for the answer
which I ‘ll depict shortly here. If you get no sound from KMid it Holds because you take a Midi synthesiser which makes not come pre-installed in Mepis.

Mepis on pendrive: some improvement, some dead-ends

Once again I spent the day using Mepis 8 on the 4GB pendrive on my EeePC 901. Quite honestly, it lacks very little for normal day-2-day use although it might just be very marginally slower. More here

Additionally, it seems, for reasons I haven’t investigated, to run into high CPU problems with windows graying out momentarily and the whole screen freezing.
I managed to get Yakuake working fine today simply by changing the action key from F12 to F10.
