Hi, during DebConf9 the Debian Keyring Maintainers, the “Debian Maintainer Keyring Team” and FTPMaster discussed the maintenance of the extra debian-maintainers keyring. The conclusion was that the maintenance of the keyring is handed over to the Debian Keyring maintainers, while the policy (add/remove/change) is kept with the DM Keyring team.

Thanks to this change we FTPMasters can now allow Debian Maintainers to
also use our various upload queues[2] for their uploads. You are no
longer bound to ftp-master only.

Note that DAK learns about changes in the keyring during dinstall, so
there can be a delay of up to 6 hours before a newly added key is fully
working. As DAK sends a mail with a summary of changes it learned, it is
safest to wait until you saw this mail appear on debian-projects@l.d.o.

[1] It is now a similar handling as for the other keyrings. There DAM
tells keyring-maint who to add/remove.
[2] With the exception of security. DMs continue to be unable to do
security uploads, as that archive has no knowledge of DMUA status of
packages.

– bye, Joerg <holger> Ganneff: Im confident in your ability to create flamewars.

About 250 people from over 35 countries attended this year’s Debian conference, DebConf9, which took place from July 24th to 30th in Cáceres, Extremadura, Spain. About 80 of them also attended the Debianworking camp, DebCamp, which preceded the conference from July 16th to23rd. DebCamp is mostly used for face to face meetings by teams withinDebian, but also by groups of Debian contributors working on ad-hoc projects that require closer collaboration.

Thanks to strong sponsorship from HP, Junta de Extrematura, Telefonica,
Linux Magazine, Google, Collabora, Canonical, Qt, maemo.org, Comparex,
Intel, Ayuntamiento de Cáceres and others, the conference’s catering,
facilities, accomodation as well as abundant computing power were free
of charge to all early registrants and inexpensive to other attendees.
Additionally, this allowed many active Debian contributors from both
inside and outside Europe to receive travel subsidies to make their
attendance possible. The Junta de Extrematura’s support in planning and
organising the conference helped to make the event go smoothly and leave
a professional and hospitable impression.

Much like the Debian project itself, the conference organisation team
consists only of volunteers. The combination of their hard work and
support from the sponsors helped DebConf9 to be highly productive,
achieving several seminal results. Debian Project Leader Steve McIntyre
concluded: “This has been one of the most productive conferences we have
ever held. Our developers and teams achieved a great deal during this
short period, and this will surely have a big impact on the upcoming
release of ‘Squeeze’.”

Among the many notable talks were the release team’s keynote, presenting
the release goals and further plans for Debian GNU/Linux 6.0 “Squeeze”
as well as the new timed freezes release policy, and the Project
Leader’s keynote, which prompted discussions about motivating the
project’s developer base in the future to work further towards Debian’s
motto of being the “universal operating system”.

In all, over 130 different sessions took place during the conference,
ranging from formal talks to numerous spontaneously scheduled meetings.
For most of these sessions, live video streams were made available over
the internet. This allowed participation of non attending Debian
contributors, who could additionally participate in discussions via
special chat channels. As with recordings of previous Debian
conferences, the videos will be made public at
http://debconf9.debconf.org/video once they have been processed and
edited.

The next Debian Conference [1] will take place in 2010 in New York City,
USA. The DebConf website contains much more information about DebConf
[2], as well as several pictures [2] from this year’s conference.

Cáceres, Extremadura, Spain, 22 July 2008 – Come 24 July, the city of
Cáceres in the autonomous community of Extremadura in western Spain will be the temporary home for almost 300 attendees of the annual conference of the Debian project. The Debian project is the team behind the free and open-source Debian GNU/Linux operating system.

    * Annual Debian conference to take place 24-30 July 2009
* Hosted at UNESCO World Heritage city Cáceres, Extremadura, Spain
* General public invited to open conference day, Friday 24 July
* Events streamed live over the Internet
* Unique wine available pressed from Extremadura grapes

The conference takes place at Residencia Muñoz Torrero, Ronda de San
Francisco, 2. The event is sponsored by HP, the government of
Extremadura, Telefonica and many other supporters. Registration is
required to attend this free event.

On Friday 24 July, the conference opens its doors to host talks and
presentations geared at the general public. Developers and users will be
on site to answer questions. No registration is required to attend the
open day, and everyone is welcome. Admission is free of charge.

More information is available from the conference website,

http://debconf9.debconf.org.

“The government of Extremadura is very supportive of free software,”
says César Gómez Martín, a civil servant from Cáceres and one of the
local organisers. “In addition to our gnuLinEx initiative, a complete
computer software solution for all Extremadura schools and official
institutions built on Debian, we are keen to support free software
projects and events. We are happy to sponsor DebConf, and excited to
host the conference in the beautiful city of Cáceres.”

Prior to the conference, more than a hundred contributors to the Debian
Project gathered on-site to cooperate in solving problems and adding
features to the the computer operating system.

The personal interaction at such an event trumps Debian’s usual
round-the-clock, global collaboration over the Internet. “The main
benefit of meeting in person regularly is improved communication due to
the better bandwidth through real-life interaction, a technology which
is also becoming quite popular in the wider Debian community” says
Debian developer Holger Levsen.

As an additional highlight a wine made from organically grown
Tempranillo grapes in Extremadura has been produced by the DebConf9
organisers to celebrate this event, and the use of free software in the
world. Debian and wine are made and enjoyed worldwide, as expressed in
the sentiment written on the bottle: “Share the wine, share the
software.”

While DebConf is mainly focused on direct communication and
collaboration, participation for people abroad is also possible via live
video streams and IRC (Internet Relay Chat). As has been happening since
2006, the world will be able to follow along as the talks happen, and
recordings will be made freely available for download for those who miss
the live sessions. See http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf9/Streams for
more information.

For €249 incl. 16% VAT (deductable upon presentation of a valid EU
VAT ID), you can pre-order:

  – a “buzz-free” Openmoko Neo Freerunner phone (A7)
(“buzz-free” means it’s free of the infamous “buzz” bug)
– an extra battery
– a headset
– a debugging board (v3)

to be handed over at the conference. Please note that at the moment,
we can only offer the 900MHz version (EU, not US), but we are trying
to get our hands on a few A6s which will have the buzz fix applied.

This offer is limited to registered attendees who pick up the phone
themselves at the conference. There’s one phone per attendee. We
will not mail the phone, nor let others pick it up for you. Tuxbrain
are shouldering a lot of logistics, costs, and efforts to make this
offer possible, without any margin to themselves, so we have to take
these measures to prevent them from serving as a public charity.

Still excited? Then log in to Penta

and follow the link in the left pane, “Freerunner for DebConf
attendees”. The rest is between you and the web shop.

conference. The deadline for orders is 30 June.

Cáceres (pronounced like Katheres, with an accent on the a) is the capital of
times. Evidence of this can be found in the caves of Maltravieso and El
Conejar. The city was founded by the ancient Romans in 25 BC.

The old town, or Ciudad Monumental, still has its ancient walls; this part of
town is also well known for its multitude of storks’ nests. The walls
contain a perfect medieval town setting with no outward signs of modernity.
For this reason many films have been shot here. The Universidad de

Cáceres was declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO in 1986 because of the
city’s blend of Roman, Islamic, Northern Gothic and Italian Renaissance
styles, fruit of the many battles fought here throughout history. An amazing

This year submission of a formal written paper for the conference proceedings
is again optional, though encouraged. Providing a written paper in advance
means that interested people can attend your session ready with ideas for
discussion, and especially helps those who find it hard to follow rapid
English speech.

DebConf talks will be broadcast live on the internet where possible, and
videos of the talks will be published on the web along with the presentation
slides and papers.

registration send to debian-devel-announce@l.d.o today. Then use the ‘New

Registration for DebConf9 opened: Registration is now open for DebConf9, which will take place in Cáceres, Extremadura from Friday 24 to Thursday 30 July 2009.

To register follow one of the processes outlined below:

- If you registered for last year’s conference, DebConf8, go to
https://penta.debconf.org/penta/submission/dc9/person to login.

- If you didn’t register for last year’s conference you need an account in
the conference management system. To register one, go to
https://penta.debconf.org/penta/user and create an account. After visiting
the activation URL sent to you by email, go to
https://penta.debconf.org/penta/submission/dc9/person and log in.

After you logged in
——————-
After you successfully logged in, please fill in at least the ‘General’,
‘Contact’ and ‘Travel’ tabs reachable through the ‘Registration details’
button on the bar on the left of the page. Please pay special attention to
the ‘DebConf’ and ‘DebCamp’ boxes on the ‘General’ tab. You need to select at
least the “I want to attend this conference” checkbox or your registration
won’t be valid.

Note to users who have an account from last year: We did our best to make
sure you do not have to reenter all your personal data again, just the
conference-specific changes. But please check if it is all still valid.

Travel Sponsorship
——————
We hope to obtain enough sponsorship to help some people attend who would not
be able to pay for their own travel. We intend to allocate travel sponsorship
money between April and June. We will make travel sponsorship reimbursements
as soon as possible, but unfortunately sometimes in the past it has only been
possible quite long after DebConf.

If you would like to apply for travel sponsorship, please fill in as much
information as you can on the registration pages. Even if you have not
arranged your travel when you apply for sponsorship, we need to know which
days you intend to spend at the conference.

The deadline for sponsorship applications is April 15th.

(This is also the case if you apply for accomodation and food sponsorship,
without travel sponsorship.)

DebCamp Attendance
——————
DebCamp is a smaller, less formal event than the main conference, giving an
opportunity for group work on Debian projects. It will again be held in the
week before DebConf, from Thursday 16th until Thursday 23rd July. In an
effort to make DebCamp a little more organised we ask everyone who wants to
attend DebCamp to fill in an additional textfield describing their work plans
for the Camp.

Cost of attendance
——————
As multiple attendees of past conferences suggested that we make it easy for
attendees to make a contribution towards the cost of their DebConf
attendance, we are again offering a way to do this.

As in the past the conference is free, and we will try our best to offer food
and accommodation sponsorship to everyone who registers before April 15th. We
also offer two additional registration options, “Professional” and
“Corporate”. The Professional category, EUR 300.00, is meant for every
individual or company who want to help the conference by making a
contribution to reflect the cost of their attendance. The Corporate
category, EUR 1000.00, is intended for companies who pay their employees’
attendance fees. If you register as a Corporate attendee, we will list your
company on a special page on the conference website.

We encourage everybody to help making DebConf a success by selecting the
Professional or Corporate registration category.

Attendees that register late (after April 15th) will need to pay at least the
Professional fee (EUR 300).

Looking forward to welcoming you to Cáceres in July, the DebConf team
