In terms of what runs under the hood, the M300 takes a different direction from Dell KACE’s larger K1000 appliance. The K1000 uses an open source FreeBSD operating system as its base. In contrast, the new M300 uses a Debian Linux operating system.

After more than 4 weeks, my new notebook finally arrived last monday. Monday this week I tried installing Debian Squeeze (still is testing) on my new Latitude and after 2 hours formatting the drive with dmcrypt, failed with a not starting X, not finding a screen.
I wanted to do a fresh install using an install CD for Squeeze, but unfortunately I had a couple problems that I couldn’t solve, so I decided to get a netinst (or businesscard) installer for Lenny and do dist-upgrade as soon as the basic system is working.

I have a Dell D630 Latitude(running Lenny) that i use at work. While trying to push the framebuffer size, i had to experiment a bit with numbers, because i couldn’t get ready to use values off google for widescreen framebuffers.
With the laptop finally showing its age I decided to go with Debian, first Etch but soon enough Lenny was released so I upgraded to it and installing some additional software and such.

So if you get that shiny new Dell desktop and ACPI spit bunch of message at the install time and the network driver does not get detected you can follow these steps to have it working.
