Previously the Debian logo in the lower right side of the Grub screen tended to obscure the portion of the boot message that tells you how many seconds are left until the machine boots automatically.

Boot to the GRUB menu. Then, press (for edit) before Linux has a chance to boot. Using your keyboard arrow keys, move the cursor down a line or so, and press (for edit) again, you should now be on the kernel line, and press to go out to the very end of that line….

Thus yesterday while switching on my notebook I was unpleasently surprised with an error Grub Error 17 and the boot process was hanging before it would even get to grub’s OS select menu

Fixing an unbootable computer after a failed grub installation can be a bit tricky. Here’s what I ended up doing.
The reason for grub error 15 is very simple and so is the solution. The error gives you a message “Error 15: File not found!” simply because the file grub wants is not there. why? because grub is looking into a wrong device.
