Knoppix is something of a legend as far as system administrators and computer repair technicians are concerned. Most people who know about it have a healthy respect for it. More here

Klaus Knopper teaches at the Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences where he lectures in software engineering and software technology and occasionally gives seminars and talks about open source in various parts of the IT industry. Klaus received his diploma in electrical engineering from the Kaiserslautern University of Technology, which in German is die Technische Universität Kaiserslautern.

Knoppix Live CD distro rev’d

Klaus Knopper has released version 6.2 of his Debian-based live-CD Linux distro. Based on Debian 5.0 (“Lenny”), the new version uses the lightweight LXDE as the default desktop, and includes a new version of the ADRIANE talking menu system for vision-impaired users. More here

Today, Knoppix is commonly used by independent software vendors wishing to create demonstration versions of their wares. Knoppix is also fairly easy to install on CompactFlash, as described in this Knoppix-based solid-state CF music recorder project. Several Live CD distros are based on Knoppix, including Dreamlinux.

Knoppix 6.2 features version 2.6.31.6 of the Linux kernel, X.org 7.4 and version 1.2 of ADRIANE (Audio Desktop Reference Implementation and Networking Environment). ADRIANE is a “a talking menu system, which is supposed to make work and internet access easier for computer beginners, even if they have no sight contact to the computers monitor.” More here

About three months ago, my friend, Freddie had recommended me to use the Knoppix. He said that he have been very tired about the Windows and decided to change it to Knoppix. More here

Furthermore, the best part about using Knoppix operating system is we’re free from the risk of getting any harmful computer viruses, as the nasty viruses will be gone, once we’re switching off the bootable Knoppix CD/DVD. Sounds like a very cool feature, isn’t it?

Knoppix via PXE

I was able to get knoppix to boot through my PXE and it recognizes the hard drives, which is the most important thing when you want to do hard drive recovery More here

I had to piece together a few “how-to’s” to get it to work for me but here is a rough outline and I’m not good at taking notes and I’m not really sure what worked.. I just know it works.

Defining the best Linux distros is like defining the best car–one does not exist; instead, the best cars are the ones that meet your needs, and your needs may vary wildly from the needs of another person. Just as an F150 might be the best vehicle for you and a Civic for me, Ubuntu might be what you need from Linux while I’ll be fine with DSL. More here about Ubuntu

The eight distros below are listed based on several different criteria–community, usability support, etc. This article avoids, for lack of a better word, “general” distros. Read it here

Debian isn’t on the list because Ubuntu is; overall, Ubuntu is the better option for most users over Debian. This list covers several different types of distros: full desktop, LiveCD, and lightweight, etc.

Knoppix 6.0 Linux LiveCD replaces KDE with LXDE

Last month Knoppix 6.0 was released, and it’s even faster and prettier than earlier versions. But it’s still designed to run well on older and slower computers. Among the changes in version 6.0 is the switch from the KDE desktop environment to the LXDE graphical environment. More here and here

Knoppix 6.0 also boots twice as fast as Knoppix 5, and comes with fewer applications preloaded, which helps keep the size down. While the main disk image weighs in at 645MB, it can be remastered to use 256MB or less.

The latest version of the live CD boots much faster due to a rewrite of the boot system – Knopper calls the new system Microknoppix. It has very close compatibility with its Debian base, a faster boot process and uses the lightweight X11 desktop environment (LXDE) for its graphical desktop.
