Some time ago, the Debian Developers decided to include Mono in the default Debian installation. This move was controversial, and provoked a discussion. After considering the different opinions, I decided to voice mine. More here

The overall effect on the other distros is hard to predict. On one hand, they will get some of the users that switch away from Debian. On the other hand, they will lose some users that will be scared by the wave of action against Debian, and will assume that no Linux user is safe. The other distros will surely try to counter this false assumption, but one must not forget that there are very strong IT players who are well-connected in the media, have enormous marketing budgets and are interested into strengthening it. So, my guess is that the other distros will lose more than they will get.

But after Free Software Foundation chief Richard Stallman called the Debian move risky – he based the statement on the inference that a decision on including Mono in the Debian default install had already been taken – Debian spokesman Alexander Reichle-Schmehl decided that the project had to speak up and did so by trying to explain things through a post on his blog.

Unfortunately, his statement contained some spin and also a number of errors. Reichle-Schmehl had to then write a second, much longer statement, explaining things all over again.

Brace yourself … if Debian wants to install mono in a gnome package, they should. That’s right, I said they should. Mono is a part of GNOME via Tomboy right now. I think that is a horrible situation, and I think Gnote should replace Tomboy in GNOME immediately if not sooner, but to beat up Debian for installing what the user asks for is misplacing the blame.

However, I must say that I’m rather disappointed in Richard Stallman. His comments on the current debacle in the Debian community read as no more informed on the issue than those of the average Reddit troll. I generally expect better commentary from him, including not just technical details when applicable, but also a good philosophical argument behind his positions. This case simply lacks either.
