I just recently downloaded and installed Mepis again. I’ll have to say, it has really improved from previous installs I’ve tried. Before it was based on Ubuntu and had the blot inherited from such a blotted upstream distro.

I had decided that once I get Wrath of the Lich King working in two different distros, I would reformat and repartition my main hard drive to do away with Windows 2000 entirely.

SimplyMEPIS is the name, and version 8.0 is based around Debian 5 stable, which is more than enough to sell me.

One of the more popular Linux distributions, but not one that’s offering much of a threat to Ubuntu in terms of popularity, Simply MEPIS nonetheless has much to commend it. It’s the community version of the MEPIS distribution, and right from the start it glistens with commercial gloss.

Depressed, and almost giving up, I came across MEPIS and since I didn’t yet know how to burn an iso image to a CD, I simply mailed off $10 and MEPIS sent me a Live CD. Certainly, this cheap ten buck distro couldn’t out perform the hundred dollar super distros.

At first I was reluctant to install MEPIS but later I caved because being unable to get the speakers to work was just annoying. I downloaded, and installed it. And lo and behold, the built-in speakers work now

For a time I feared that my laptop would reach it’s end of useful life before I found a distro as excellent as MEPIS, but that’s all in the past now.

No matter what artwork Linux developers use for their distros, you can bet that someone won’t like it. Mepis users have complained loudly about that distro’s default appearances, leading to a huge community effort to beautify things over the past few releases.

This post helped me install Oracle XE/Oracle instantclient successfully! It worked for my Debian Lenny system previously, and now it’s tested to work with MEPIS 8.0 as well.

Since I already had the CD of Mepis 8, I decided to see what it would do on the old laptop. It booted just fine and everything looked great, so I made the decision to install it on the drive.

I am writing this tutorial because I have received feedback from people I have recommended Mepis 8 to that the step where partitioning is done or partitions are selected during the install is not clear. Also, I have seen questions about upgrading an existing Mepis installation or reinstalling to fix a broken installation. I will [...]

Warren Woodford, founder and lead developer of MEPIS Linux, had previously complained that Debian 5.0 “Lenny” didn’t ship with a long-term support Linux kernel, and so the latest release of MEPIS breaks form with Lenny only days after its release by shipping with a newer kernel

This time around I tried the daddy of many desktops, Debian Lenny, and compared it with Mepis 8.0 on my notebook. I am pleased how Debian has made itself easy to install and use – booting from netinstall.iso to a full-blown Debian Desktop was easier than ever.

Finally, after months of betas and release candidates, the wait is over. In my opinion, the finest Linux distribution a person could possibly use is ready for download and use.

I AM a little conflicted about Mepis. It is part of the family of Debian-based Linux distributions which I tend to favour, and it is a distribution I used for quite a lengthy period in the past.

I wasn’t planning on making the switch quite yet, but it worked out just right, anyway. Simply Mepis (SM) has been my Linux distribution of choice for a long time now, and it’s getting closer to going gold all the time.

When will SimplyMEPIS be released? MEPIS developer, Warren Woodford, says, “MEPIS 8.0 is in good shape but since MEPIS is meant to have a Debian Stable core, I’d prefer to wait and declare it final when Debian Lenny is released.”
